01.12.2021 | 17 officials responsible for the protection of forests in Tavush region in the status of the accused

During the past year, the fight against illegal logging and criminal actions of officials responsible for their prevention continued in Tavush region.

For 10 months of 2021, 210 cases of illegal logging were registered in the region, as well as 210 cases of illegal removal of timber.

From these, by 113 was made a decision on not initiating a criminal case, mainly because the damage caused was not sufficient to warrant criminal prosecution. Despite this, 42 people have been prosecuted by these cases, 85% of the damage to the state has already been compensated, and work is underway to restore the rest.

By other facts, criminal cases were initiated under Article 296 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. 21 of these criminal cases (initiated on the fact of violations committed as a result of official negligence or abuse of official position by foresters responsible for forest protection) were initiated under Articles 315 or 308 of the RA Criminal Code.

2 criminal cases were sent to court. By one of them, a forester of Dilijan National Park SNCO was charged with negligence in his service, as a result of which 46 trees were illegally cut down, causing damage in the amount of 6.8 million drams to nature, and by another case, another forester was charged with taking a bribe. In both cases, the property of the defendants was seized to provide guarantees for the restoration of damage.

In addition, under the supervision of the prosecutor's office of Tavush region, three large-scale, criminal cases are being investigated in connection with the abuse of official position by officials of the SNCO "Hayantar" of Ijevan forestry.

A total of 15 foresters were charged by these criminal cases.

The total damage caused to the state by these 3 criminal cases is 21.4 million drams, in order to ensure compensation for damage, the property of the accused was seized.

In addition to the above, within the framework of the criminal cases investigated in connection with illegal logging, the prosecutor's office of Tavush region submitted 5 petitions, 4 petitions and 9 reports regarding carrying out an internal investigation. As a result, 18 people were subject to disciplinary fine. At the same time, 2 foresters were dismissed from their positions, and the leaders of their immediate superior department were severely reprimanded. The indicator of work performed by prosecutors in this area is essentially twice as much as compared to the same period last year.
